“True Philippine Ghost Stories” is a horror series written and illustrated by British author and comics artist Ian McNaughton. The tales are highly entertaining and frightening, owing to the zany-yet-somewhat serious tone. Yet, despite the jokes and the obvious parody, the book has been viewed by millions of people over the years. McNaughton’s work is not only popular but has inspired many. For those who are not familiar with McNaughton’s work, McNaughton’s illustrations are undeniably reminiscent of Sergio Aragones’ work. Aragones is well-known for his “Sergio Stories” comic strip, which was first published in the Madrid newspaper, “El Mercurio” in the late 1960s and later in Spanish-language comic books in the United States. Aside from Aragones’ influence, McNaughton also drew inspiration from the work of Edgar Allan Poe. McNaughton first published the “True Philippine Ghost Stories” series in the late 1970s. The first four volumes were released through an amateur press association in the Philippines, before these first four volumes were acquired by publisher East Press in the United States. The first 10 volumes, which sold a total of 100,000 copies, had only been available to the public for less than 10 years when the first four volumes were first reprinted in 2002 by PSICOM, Inc. In 2009, McNaughton joined the Spider-Man franchise. His illustrations were given a shot of “Spider-Man Noir” in the webspinned monthly comic book, “Amazing Spider-Man.” The following year, McNaughton released his first graphic novel, “Silent Nightmares.” The story follows a neurosurgeon who is haunted by a child’s drawing. A year later, McNaughton released his second graphic novel, “The Perfect Girl.” The story follows a man who becomes obsessed with an internet chat room chatroom where people discuss the idea of the perfect girl. Released in 2012, McNaughton’s third graphic novel, “Afterlife” also tells a story about the afterlife. McNaughton’s work was collected into a two-volume graphic novel series in 2015. McNaughton’s fourth graphic novel, “The Girl With the Ghost Eyes,” was released in 2017
